CGI COMMITMENTS

A Commitment to Action — the defining feature of CGI — is a plan for addressing a significant global challenge. Commitments can be small or large and financial or nonmonetary in nature. Many commitments are the result of cross-sectoral partnerships, with CGI members combining efforts to expand their impact. To date, CGI members have made more than 2,500 commitments, which are already improving the lives of more than 430 million people in over 180 countries. When fully funded and implemented, these commitments will be valued at $88 billion.

CGI supports the development of commitments by facilitating dialogue, providing opportunities to identify partners, showcasing the actions taken by commitment-makers, and communicating results. CGI serves as a catalyst for action, but does not engage in the actual implementation of commitments.

Every CGI Commitment must meet three basic criteria:

New
A CGI commitment is a plan that presents a new idea or approach to a major challenge. While preexisting work is not eligible, an expansion of a successful program also qualifies as a valid Commitment to Action. Additionally, participants can become partners on other CGI commitments, for example, by providing in-kind support or technical expertise.

Specific
A CGI commitment must outline a specific approach to a problem, have clear and feasible objectives to be accomplished within a defined period of time, and articulate the desired outcome of the effort.

Measurable
A CGI commitment must have specific quantitative or qualitative goals that can be monitored by the commitment-maker to evaluate progress over time. As each commitment is implemented, annual progress is reported to CGI to show the extent of its impact.

Below is a random sample of the 3349 CGI commitments as of March 1, 2014, w/ a focus, ate the end of the list, on env oriented projects.

While many are explictly environmentally oriented, many related to health, access to food & water, econ dev, resource dev, & more also have direct env impacts

Commitment by: Fundación Azteca
Focus Area: Environment & Energy
Introduction: In 2006, Fundación Azteca and the members of the Laguna San Ignacio Conservation Alliance committed to save the gray whale by protecting close to one million acres of coastal ecosystems in the Laguna San Ignacio region of Mexico in Baja California. Fundación Azteca has done so through conservation easements with ejidos and private property owners. The Alliance has targeted priority conservation sites around the Laguna San Ignacio estuarine complex, which include areas surrounding the communities of La Bocana and Punta Abreojos, Estero el Coyote, and Laguna San Ignacio itself. Of primary importance are the estuaries and included mangrove forests of La Bocana, Estero El Coyote, and Laguna San Ignacio. The Alliance has established 35 private conservation easements to secure the protection of 20,000 acres in the Ejido Luis Alvarez, completing the protection of the entire ejido. This legally binding deal is the one of the largest private land-conservation agreement in North America and is touted as a model for conserving both the environment and the area's cultural identity.

Access to Water for the Underserved in Port-au-Prince
Commitment by: United Water
Focus Area: Global Health
Introduction: In 2013, United Water committed to improving access to water for underserved communities in Port-au-Prince in partnership with the Haitian National Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DINEPA). Scaling up a successful pilot project of 26 kiosks, which currently provide clean water access to 39,000 families in Port-au-Prince, United Water will construct 200 additional kiosks over the next five years. In addition to providing access to clean water, which is essential to prevent outbreaks, such as cholera, the local distribution centers will also reduce the amount of time girls and women, who bear the primary responsibility for collecting water, will need to spend on that activity. The construction and management of the kiosks will also provide income-generating opportunities for up to 1,600 people.

Evaluating Coastal Wetlands: Bang for Our Restoration Buck
Commitment by: Center for American Progress
Focus Area: Environment & Energy
Introduction: In 2013, the Center for American Progress, in partnership with Oxfam America, committed to establishing metrics that assign monetary value to restored and protected U.S. coastal wetlands ecosystems. These benefits include storm surge protection, pollution filtration, and habitat provision. Each of these benefits dramatically enhances commercially and recreationally important fish stocks for coastal communities and beyond. Unfortunately, little research exists to define these benefits in economic terms. The goal of the partnership is to better integrate ecosystem protection and restoration into US policy on coastal infrastructure and land use. The commitment will include a published report explaining why coastal ecosystems are valuable, why investments in restoration are needed, and will conclude with specific recommendations for policy makers and the public. This commitment will make new strides to include environmental considerations in public decision-making and fostering investments in coastal ecosystem restoration.

Unlocking the Power of Microalgae: New Sustainable Oil
Commitment by: Solazyme, Inc.
Focus Area: Environment & Energy
Introduction: In 2013, Solazyme committed to scaling the production of a new source of sustainable renewable microalgal oil for use in consumer products. Solazyme will use one of the world's smallest microbes, microalgae, to help arrest environmental damage in fragile equatorial ecosystems through the replacement of palm oil in products with microalgal oil. Solazyme's oils are produced in a matter of days by using algae to convert biomass to oils and have been third party validated to be the most sustainable source of oil ever produced. Solazyme's technology divorces geography from natural oil production so tropical oils can now be produced anywhere, thus alleviating deforestation pressures around the fragile equator band. This commitment will also benefit partners using microalgal oil by providing 100 percent traceability and shortened supply chains.
